Web Conferencing ESL

The changes in world and economic conditions has brought many technological advancements such as web conferencing into the market, altering the way things are done. Learning for instance has never been made more convenient that it has been today with the emergence of web conferencing solutions targeted towards e-learning.

One of the many avenues in learning that the web conferencing revolution is targeting is the area of language including important requisites such as ESL or English as a Second Language. Many non-English speaking people would like to learn the language in order to get more prospects when it comes to looking for employment. But with most ESL centers located in primarily English-speaking countries, people who are living in a whole different country have only relatively little access to ESL materials. Not so with web conferencing.

The strength of web conferencing lies in its power to interconnect people from various points of the globe. With web conferencing, distance is no longer an issue as any sort of discussion is possible without feeling the need to meet face-to-face.

Web conferencing allows ESL instructors to reach the world and impart upon those who want to learn information and knowledge. ESL presentations and demonstrations are made easier with web conferencing which comes with its own audio voice capability. The integration of video in web conferencing also adds a whole new level of interactive to ESL e-learning sessions.

Web conferencing is perfect for those who are unable to go to the ESL learning center physically because of distance or problems in travel. With web conferencing, you no longer need to leave your home in order to attend an ESL seminar. ESL instruction sheets and study guides can be shared with other web conferencing participants, making for an online environment that is conducive to learning and collaboration.

Difficulties ESL Learners Encounter

Aside form distance, ESL learners may also encounter other difficulties during the learning process. They face many factors, such as idioms, appropriate familiarity and formality face, all of which are typical difficulties that a learner of any language faces. However, English does have some unique characteristics that pose a hurdle for most of those who grew up speaking another language. These can be helped overcome with web conferencing.

For instance, English consonants have more individual consonant sounds than most languages but the “th” sound, common in English (the, this, that, thin, etc.) is not a sound in most other languages. Thus, ESL learners may have difficulty with this. But with the audio capabilities of web conferencing, this can be lessened as learners will now have something to base their sounds on.
