Web Conferencing Purpose

Web conferencing is a system application that allows users to have online group discussions that use the World Wide Web for their gateway interface. That, in essence, is the purpose of web conferencing.

The term web conferencing generally refers to a form of discussion regardless of whether it is asynchronous or not. Thus, online forms of discussions such as forums, message boards, or bulletin boards may also be termed as web conferencing since they are browser-based and depend on the Internet to facilitate communication between the members.

Lately however, web conferencing has come to mean something different. Specifically, the purpose of web conferencing systems has been to enable synchronous or real time discussions between groups of individuals using a type of browser-based application software. And instead of posted text messages which are the staple of forums and its derivatives, web conferencing came to depend on chat facilities or instant messaging to give that instant touch which is the overall purpose of web conferencing.

For the purpose of user interaction, web conferencing is often accompanied by voice communication done via VoIP technology (or Voice over Internet Protocol [IP]) or the more traditional phone system. The real purpose of web conferencing is to foster collaboration within an organization in order to increase productivity and cohesion of ideas. By combining the ease of voice communication with the multimedia appeal of slide presentations such as PowerPoint, web conferencing will be able to accomplish its purpose and its goal.

Additionally, web conferencing is also beginning to incorporate several video aspects into its system. Video serves to enhance interaction between participants of a meeting, offering the visual counterbalance to the audio provided by voice communication. Thus, where before video conferencing was seen as distinct from web conferencing, for the purpose of interaction and collaboration, the system began to converge several developments into one single, full-featured technological hybrid.

There are a variety of web conferencing systems available today and that number continues to grow daily. These systems can run the gamut from being very, very basic (almost like bulletin boards) to very sophisticated that offers all important features designed to achieve the purpose of such a technology. Not surprisingly, the price can also run the gamut, from being freeware on up to top of the line commercial systems that come with a distinctly high price tag.

And while each solution may not always offer you different options, some packages do have a few extra features included that serve to enhance the product’s functionality and usability. So when you’re searching for the right web conferencing package, keep in mind your purpose in looking for such a package.
